Denis Allen, 2011 Ultimate rookie
| Hometown, Prov |
Kitchener, ON |
 |
| Age |
49 |
| Weight |
155 lbs. |
| Goals |
Complete all races within a total time between 12 and 13 hours. |
| Personal bests |
5 km - 20:21; 8 km -33:39; 10 km - 42:27; 8 mi 58: 59; ½ marathon
- 1:40; marathon - 3:57. I encountered an injury in the Marathon
where the last 6 miles took me 75 minutes instead of the usual 45.
I was happy to finish that one. During the ENDURrun I will be looking
at setting new personal bests for the 1/2 and full Marathons. |
| Favourite distance |
I equally enjoy all race distances. My favourite training runs
include 3, 5, and 8 mile repeats. |
| Favourite race food, drink |
PRE race it's A.C.T. energy drinks within 30 minutes to 1 hour
of the race, 2-3 hours before a high carb cereal with banana or craisins,
coffee and water to ensure my hydration level is up. DURING races
its Cliff Energy Shots (chewable), Endura (electrolyte replacement
drink) and water. POST race it is usually something like homemade
protein balls or Premium protein shakes, followed by whatever drinks
available for rehydration. If I do really well, I treat myself to
Dairy Queen ice cream. |
| Running history |
I started running 3 years ago. Did some running back in high school
and I could run less then a then a 5 minute mile back then. I hope
to get back to the high school times if the body will hold up. |

I look forward to the mental and physical challenge of the ENDURrun,
have fun and enjoy the camaraderie. |

in the early to mid 80s. Started running seriously again in 2007.
In April 2009 was named by Get Out There Magazine and Sports Stats
as the Most Frequent Runner in Ontario Road Races (timed) in 2008.
Since May 2007 have completed 14 ultras, 25 marathons and 85 other
races/fun runs, ranging from 5k – 30k. I run both road and

At first I thought that the ENDURrun was beyond me. Watching it
and participating as a guest runner in 2006 gave me the courage to
train, under the guidance and wisdom of Ray Nelson, as an ENDURrun
2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Ultimate competitor. The ENDURrun is more
than a race. The personal attention that each athlete receives, the
camaraderie
amongst the competitors, and the extensive support of the volunteers
make it a great experience. Hey, where else do race directors organize
your birthday party?! |

I would love to move up a rank from last year. Most importantly
though, I would like to beat my time from last year by besting my
times from last years stages. |
| Personal bests |
½ marathon - 1:23:54; marathon - 3:04:18; ENDURrun - 12:24:19 |
| Favourite distance |
While I think the half marathon is my best distance, I am still
enamoured with the marathon distance. |
| Favourite race food, drink |
I’d have to say my favourite race food is fresh dates. As
for beverages, I ran my only negative split marathon (last years
ENDURrun) after drinking some chia seeds with lemon juice and wate
(iskiate for all you "Born to Run" readers) at the half
way point. Then there is Ontario micro-brewed beer - post race of
course. |
| Running history |
I started running in 2007 with the desire of achieving more tangible
goals than I was getting from mere weight-lifting. My obsessive compulsive
tendencies took over, and I have since run 9 marathons and dozens
of other races at various distance, including the 2010 ENDURrun.
I recently completed my goal of running the Boston marathon this
past April, although I missed my goal time of sub 3:00 by four minutes
due to...BLISTERS! Oh how sad... but at least I got the hardware
and the jacket which I'll be wearing until the day I die :). |
| Additional comments |
Looking forward to meeting and hanging out with all the new competitors
and re-connecting from those who are returning. Those of you who

| Favourite race food, drink |
Don't know if I have a favorite, I've hooked on to a recovery drink
called power shot organic energy. I happen to drink a lot of Lucozade
and Gateroade during my run. Night before I like plain pasta with
red sauce |
| Running history |
Been running for years. Numerous halfs, 3 marathons (London UK
twice), this is my first multistage ultimate |
| Additional comments |
A little trepidatious of this race, while I've done back to back

(volleyball & basketball). Did a few road races in the late 90s
just for fun (and for the free t-shirt--who knew I'd eventually have

running club (Albany Running Exchange) and have been doing crazy

I have entered the ENDURrun to raise funds for Help for Heroes,
which helps the service men and women who have been injured in Afghanistan.
I am determined to finish the event. I have never run back to back
races before and am extremely nervous about it. I am also thinking
why did I ever enter this, then I think about letting Help for Heroes
down if I do not do it and that makes me determined to finish it,
even if I finish last in every event. |

| Running history |
I started running primarily on the treadmill. In 2007 I started
running outdoors with my uncle who was living with us at the time.
He was the one that motivated me into running longer distances and
running outdoors. It was through him that I exceeded the 5k distance,
and moved on to the 10k. After a couple of 10k runs, he convinced
me to try for the 10 mile. From there, the half marathon. In 2008
I moved out and was left to run on my own. I quickly went back to
treadmill as I struggled to run on my own. I had lost the long distances
and the strength that I had developed. A last minute decision to
do the ScotiaBank Half got me back into the distance running again.
I had a horrible slow time of 2:15, nearly 20 minutes slower than
the year previous, but commited myself to train to achieve a better
time. I joined the Running Room that year and joined the Half Marathon
Clinic. Through the training and motivation of others, I achieved
a personal best. This program led me to the Marathon Clinics, completing
2 Marathons in 2009. In the later in 2009, I began instructing the
Half Marathon Clinic for the Pickering Running Room, to motivate
others into completing their goals. Now that the clinic has ended,
time to focus on my goals, and what I can achieve next. This will
be my 10th Marathon, second year running Endurrun and I just completed
my first Half Ironman. |

I'm not 100% decided, but I think the half marathon's my favourite. |
| Favourite race food, drink |
Pre-race, it's either peanut butter and banana on toast or oatmeal.
I like shot bloks during, and my post-race food varies. |

Started running casually in 2005, ran my first 5K race (Oktoberfest
Run) in 2006 and just kept going from there. I ran my first half
in December 2008 and my first marathon in May 2011. |
